Originally called Le grand tableau (noir), Jean-Luc Godard’s montage film Le livre d’image was made in an editing room. The first script evolved between film racks and rows of shelves. Each compartment in this scénario administrant la mise en scène resembles a film chapter. It contains the raw material, the books, images and music that make up the film. The release of the limited facsimile edition of the first version of the script, handmade by Godard in French with a booklet in English translation and numbered by hand, accompanies the exhibition Sentiments, Signes, Passions.
